Nagarote Youth Center

NGO partner: Norwalk Nagarote Sister City Project (NNSCP)
NN SCP has been working with youth in the town of Nagarote for more than 20 years. In that time they have created programs in education, community service, sports and job training. Activities include classes in computing, English, photography, hair styling, art, sewing and cooking. Workshops include health, the environment and healthy lifestyle choices. Urban reforestation, a community garden and vaccination clinics are some of the many community service activities.
The Youth Center project provides adequate classroom, administration and support spaces for NN SCP to provide their programs under one roof. The original site included an adobe Casa Vieja and a brick classroom building. Both were found to be structurally unsafe and unrepairable. The city required that the Casa Vieja be either restored or demolished and replaced to maintain the character of the historic city center. The brick classroom was not considered an historic building and, will be replaced with a small house for a caretaker.
The project is part of an ongoing partnership between ViviendasLeón and the USF School of Architecture and Community Design to design and construct buildings that benefit poor communities.
